Nearly two-thirds of U.S. voters — including a majority of Democrats — think the IRS’ targeting of conservative groups is an example of corruption. And more than seven in 10 voters want Congress to continue investigating.

The latest numbers from Fox News’ poll of 1,006 registered voters come in the wake of President Obama’s claim earlier this month that there wasn’t a “even a smidgeon of corruption” at the IRS.

Fox News’ Chris Stirewalt reported that a slight majority of Democrats (51 percent) view the IRS targeting scandal as an example of corruption. Sixty percent of Democrats think congressional action is necessary.

Nine months after the IRS story broke, the number of Americans wanting a congressional investigation is down slightly from a high of 78 percent in June 2013. Lawmakers held a hearing earlier this month with representatives of Tea Party and conservative groups and have vowed to keep the pressure on the Obama administration.
