House of Cards, a popular Netflix show, has a reputation for displaying the worst of the worst in politics, and some conservatives believe its display of the Left’s “War on Women” is no exception.

In the show, Claire Underwood, the wife of Congressman Frank Underwood, is the center of the controversy.

Claire admits to having three abortions with no regrets. She later reveals that one of her abortions was to help her husband’s less than clean political career, but lies to a journalist saying that her third abortion was to take care of a rape pregnancy in college. The Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway argues that the character used the lie to manipulate the media and further her husband’s career.

On top of the lies, Claire then tells a pregnant enemy of hers, “I’m willing to let your child wither and die inside you if that’s what’s required.” The Daily Caller characterized this as a “decidedly less-than-sincere” “war on women.”

Some conservatives see House of Cards displaying the absurdity of the “War on Women” theme. Hemingway writes:

“Keeping babies out of wombs or getting them out of there by force seems to be the major theme… It’s sort of like House of Cards is running the Democratic playbook’s ‘War on Women’ as a major storyline. Except, with no thanks to the Washington media that ruthlessly helps advance this campaign, we get to see how calculated and manipulative it really is.”
